A patch is digitized differently from a direct-to-garment logo. Because the design is stitched on backing material and cut out afterward, the border, fill density, and stitch order all have to be planned so the finished piece holds its shape instead of curling, fraying, or losing detail at the cut edge.
Border style is the first decision. A merrowed (rolled) edge suits round, oval, and simple outlines, while a die-cut laser border can follow an irregular shape with points and notches. Getting this right up front determines how the patch will actually be cut and finished.

The two most common patch border styles suit different artwork shapes — here's how to choose.
A weak or mismatched border lets the patch curl or fray once cut from the backing. We set border density and stitch order so the edge stays flat and durable.
Small lettering can turn into a solid blob once stitched. We resize, bold, or simplify text so it stays legible at the actual finished patch size.
Large solid-fill areas can pull the backing out of shape. We balance density and underlay so big patches stay flat instead of cupping or bowing.
Most patches range from 2" to 4" for chest or cap placements, up to 8"–10" for large back patches. Smaller patches need simplified detail so text and fine lines stay legible once stitched. Tell us the finished size you need and we'll flag anything in the artwork that won't hold up at that scale before digitizing.
A merrowed border is a rolled, overlocked edge stitched around the patch outline — the classic patch look, best for round, oval, or simple shapes. A die-cut (laser-cut) border follows the exact outline of the design, including irregular shapes and points, then gets a tight satin edge. We'll recommend the right border type based on your artwork's outline.
Iron-on backing is fastest to apply but works best on flat, heat-safe fabric. Sew-on backing is the most durable and the standard choice for uniforms and workwear. Velcro (hook-and-loop) backing lets the patch be removed or swapped, which is common for tactical, morale, and uniform patches. We digitize the design the same way regardless of backing — you choose the backing when you place the order.
Only above a minimum size. Lettering below roughly 0.2"–0.25" in height tends to fill in or become unreadable once stitched, especially in a busy fill area. If your artwork has small text, we'll suggest resizing, bolding, or simplifying the font so it reads cleanly at the finished patch size.
